چکیده

The human intake of selenium (Se), which is an essential element in animals and humans, can be increased through the consumption vegetables that have been biofortified during cultivation. There increasing interest wild edible plants (WEPs) due to their positive effects on health. In fact, many WEPs are rich microelements, vitamins, dietary fibers, several antioxidant compounds. Among WEPs, sea beet (Beta vulgaris ssp. maritima) ancestor Swiss chard var. cicla). present study investigated potential fortifying with Se. two subspecies were cultivated a floating system nutrient solution enriched four concentrations Se (0, 1, 3, 5 mg L−1), production quality baby leaves evaluated. addition resulted higher leaf concentration this microelement both subspecies, effect yield (+20%) chlorophyll (+25%) at 1 L−1. nitrates was reduced by treatment regardless (−24%, average). Selenium biofortification more effective than ability species acquire readily available minerals from hydroponic solution. conclusion, accumulated significant amount without negative or quality, thus proving them suitable for Se-enriched leaves.

Differences between the rhizosphere microbiome of Beta vulgaris ssp. maritima—ancestor of all beet crops—and modern sugar beets

The structure and function of the plant microbiome is driven by plant species and prevailing environmental conditions. Effectuated by breeding efforts, modern crops diverge genetically and phenotypically from their wild relatives but little is known about consequences for the associated microbiota. Therefore, we studied bacterial rhizosphere communities associated with the wild beet B. vulgaris...

Effect of Kimchi Fermentation on Oxalate Levels in Silver Beet (Beta vulgaris var. cicla)

Total, soluble and insoluble oxalates were extracted and analyzed by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) following the preparation of kimchi using silver beet (Beta vulgaris var. cicla) stems and leaves. As silver beet contains high oxalate concentrations and consumption of high levels can cause the development of kidney stones in some people, the reduction of oxalate during preparati...

Emergence of gynodioecy in wild beet (Beta vulgaris ssp. maritima L.): a genealogical approach using chloroplastic nucleotide sequences.

Gynodioecy is a breeding system where both hermaphroditic and female individuals coexist within plant populations. This dimorphism is the result of a genomic interaction between maternally inherited cytoplasmic male sterility (CMS) genes and bi-parentally inherited nuclear male fertility restorers. As opposed to other gynodioecious species, where every cytoplasm seems to be associated with male...

Sugar beet (Beta vulgaris L.).

Creating transgenic plants is invaluable for the genetic analysis of sugar beet and will be increasingly important as sugar beet genomic technologies progress. A protocol for Agrobacterium-mediated transformation of sugar beet is described in this chapter. Our protocol is optimized for a sugar beet genotype that performs exceptionally well in tissue culture, including the steps of dedifferentia...

Effect of Swiss Chard (Beta vulgaris var. cicla) as Nitrite Replacement on Color Stability and Shelf-Life of Cooked Pork Patties during Refrigerated Storage

In this study, the effects of pre-converted nitrite from Swiss chard powder (PS) on the color stability and shelf-life of cooked pork patties during refrigerated storage for 28 d were investigated. Nitrite was added at a concentration of approximately 120 ppm. Five treatments were formulated as follows: Control (120 ppm nitrite), T1 (2% PS), T2 (2% pre-converted nitrite from celery powder; PC),...
